Sexy after Breast Cancer: The Jocelyn Binder Story

FCM: I am very excited to interview Jocelyn Binder for the re-launching of our blog FCM Style.

We understand that you're a fashion model whose a Cancer survivor. Please tell us about your experience?

Jocelyn: Yes! I am a two-time breast cancer survivor. I was diagnosed at 28 with breast cancer that had spread to my lymph nodes. I underwent eight cycles of chemo and a double-mastectomy, which put me out of modeling for a while, as I
Jocelyn Binder
recovered. Last year, I was diagnosed stage 4 when the cancer reappeared on my sternum bone this time. I began endocrine therapy, along with making many lifestyle changes, and was back in remission in ten months!
FCM: So, you wrote a book " Sexy After Breast Cancer" Please tell your inspiration behind this book

Jocelyn: Yes! I was inspired to share my journey, as someone who is a breast cancer thriver, in hopes of helping other women battling. I had the advantage of assembling an exert team, including both Western and Eastern medicine doctors, therapists, acupuncturists, yoga teachers and a plethora of other spiritual leaders. So, you could say I took one for the team and am sharing what I found worked the best in my healing!

FCM: What Breast Cancer Support Organizations do you support? Why are they important to you ?

Jocelyn: I support Susan G Komen, as a breast cancer community leader and recently donated my time to shooting a video for them. It is important to me that so much awareness is being brought to breast cancer, so  that we can better manage this disease and hopefully both prevent and cure more cases going forward.

Jocelyn Binder
FCM: What do you hope to accomplish by writing this book?

Jocelyn: If only one woman heals after applying my book’s concepts to make changes in their life, it will be a huge success to me.

FCM: What's next for you Jocelyn?

Jocelyn: I’d like to become even more involved in the breast cancer community. Whether is raising money, public speaking or otherwise contributing. My goal is to aid in the efforts to enhance the healing and thriving of my fellow breast cancer survivors.

FCM: Thanks for the interview.

FCM: Do you have any parting words for our audience?

Jocelyn: Whether you’re battling with your health or just trying to make the most of the one life we have here on earth, be positive and love yourself.  Photography by Caroline Malouf

5 Simple Tips To Fix 5 Makeup Mistakes

Have you ever been putting on your makeup and when everything is going well, you suddenly make a mistake that ruins all of your effort? Have you had to take off your makeup some time because, without meaning to, you’ve ruined your makeup? Surely you have; it happens to all of us.

In this article, you will find five of the most common mistakes and the best tips to quickly fix them without having to take off all of your makeup…

We hope you’ll like them and that they’ll help you easily improve your personal image…

“I’VE PUT ON TOO MUCH FOUNDATION”

This is a very common mistake that we all make when we put on makeup. If you are totally made up, to take off any excess foundation, do the following:

• Lightly moisten a clean sponge with water (the sponge should be almost dry and without any makeup residue) and sponge all of your face with downward movements.

TIP: It’s very important, most of all, to avoid excess foundation and concealer around the eyes. To eliminate any excess in this area, perform the same step and afterwards use your fingertips to softly blur the product in that area.

“MY EYESHADOW LOOKS TOO DARK”

If you’ve put on too much eyeshadow, or it looks too dark, follow these steps to quickly fix the problem:

• If it happened on your upper eyelid, blur the eyeshadow toward the edges with a clean brush to reduce the color. If it still looks very dark, apply a little bit of matte cream eyeshadow with a brush (if you don’t have cream eyeshadow, you can use translucent powder) and blur the eyeshadow.

• If it happened on the lower part of your eye, use a fine, clean brush to blur, or pat it softly with a Q-tip.

• If as you were blurring, you’ve left the contour of the eyelid and the shadow looks very dark, blur it with a clean sponge and afterwards apply a little bit of foundation, patting lightly to fix the foundation.

“I’VE PUT ON TOO MUCH BLUSH”

If you applied too much blush, try the following tip:

• Stroke your cheek with a thick, loose powder bush—the brush should be completely clean. If you still have too much blush on, apply translucent or clear powder with the same brush, just over the blush. That way the two powders should mix, clarifying the original color.

“I’VE PUT TOO MUCH MAKEUP ON MY EYEBROWS”

When we put too much makeup on our eyebrows, we look harsh and we can’t even recognize ourselves. Follow the following tip to quickly solve this:

• Simply brush the eyebrow with a clean Q-tip, going against the grain of your eyebrow. You will see how quickly the color you initially applied disappears.

“I’VE SMEARED MASCARA ON MY EYELID”

That’s all right. Just follow these next steps and you’ll see how you can quickly fix the problem:

• Continue applying makeup and when you have finished, allowing enough time for the mascara to dry, apply a Q-tip right over the smudge. You’ll see how it quickly disappears and you don’t need to remove the makeup from your whole eye.

TIP: A good trick to avoid smudging yourself is applying makeup first to your inferior eyelashes and then to the superior.

Up Close with Victoria Barbara Montalvo

FCM-Thank you for granting Fashion Couture Magazine for the opportunity to chat us regarding  your career, fashion, and upcoming projects.

FCM- You have been described as Model, Fitness Guru and all-around Influencer. How do you multi-task all those positions?

Victoria Barbara Montalvo-Being a high profile influencer I have learned to manage my time more efficiently. I guess it comes with the territory.

FCM-Of your different jobs, which are you most passionate about?

Victoria Barbara Montalvo- I am an overall fitness fanatic. I am very passionate about healthy living and I share my passion with other influencers, friends and my fans. I believe in always trying to be a better version of myself.

FCM-You have gorgeous hair--do you mind giving us 1 tip on how you keep it so healthy and shiny?

Victoria Barbara Montalvo-The secret to my regimen is Alkaline water. I honestly think everyone should try it.  I drink it; I bathe in it and use to wash my face and hair to hydrate. I do not wash my hair every single day as it tends to make my hair dry. Organic shampoo and conditioner is highly encouraged.

FCM-Any upcoming projects you can share with us?

Victoria Barbara Montalvo- I am currently working on my fashion line which is set to launch the end of this year. I am also working on a “top secret” TV show with a big production company. I have collaborations with global brands and this requires me to do a lot of traveling.

FCM-What is your skin care routine? What’s in your Beauty Bag?

Victoria Barbara Montalvo- Alkaline Water is key. I live by it! I make sure my skin is hydrated to keep me looking fresh all day. My beauty bag? Moisturizer, hydrating serum, and sunscreen! And I only use Dr Kay’s beauty products. Her products are a must try! If you would like to connect, check her IG @beautybydrkay

FCM-What is something about you that fans might not know?

Victoria Barbara Montalvo-I have 6 fur babies!!!  I am so in love with them and they are my life!! I am very easy going and I respond to fan mails diligently.

FCM-As part of some very winning films and projects thus far, whom would you like to thank at this point in your career?

Victoria Barbara Montalvo- My sister, my “friend” and friends, my publicist! They are the ones who have been there and truly believe in me.  They support my vision and dreams.

Thank you so much for this amazing interview!!

We will select one winner to be featured in our Jan. 2016 issue. Also, you will be a major contributor for the magazine and our blog FCM Style. Our periodical, FCM Magazine showcases and embraces the International and national fashion designers, beauty, and accessory professionals. We have selected 5 fashion bloggers who exemplify our aesthetics.

One of the featured nominees is the lovely blogger Jessica R of Hapa Time who has a background in Creative Advertising and Art then juxtaposing her passion for fashion creating the fashion blog Hapa Time. Jessica is pictured in the stunning red maxi dress with the balloons. Her journey also began in 2011 with Chictopia.com. Initially in 2009, Jessica noticed people posting photos of their clothing on Lookbook.nu. She was stunned at how perfect everyone was, and how professional too. She decided not to take her own photos after browsing through their website.

By chance, Jessica stumbled upon Chictopia.com possibly through Beautylish.com, one of her favorite beauty sites. Chictopia is a wonderful fashion site. And it was also a lot less intimidating. So in September 2011, Jessica started taking pictures of her various clothing looks. She had a few hits and lots of misses.  Subsequently, she got discouraged in 2 months. Then, Jessica  started her own blog at Hapa Time on BlogSpot. She does not know why being discouraged by Chictopia led me here!!  But, Jessica thinks that she knew this blog would give her more freedom to be creative fashionably.

Kristina Bazan of Kayture
The other featured fashion blogger is Kristina of Kayture by Kristina Bazan. Her passion goes beyond Modeling

Model Alana Ray Osborne has battled abdominal symptoms for the past seven years. Two years ago she was diagnosed with an invisible but painful disease known as endometriosis. The disease causes the endometrium tissue to grow outside of the uterus and can result in severe pain or infertility. Currently, there is no cure. Alana recently graduated with her Masters in Mass Communication; and used her college studies and modeling as a coping mechanism in dealing with endometriosis. She has made it her life's mission to help individuals develop the critical thinking skills to advocate on behalf of their body.

During her graduate studies in innovation and entrepreneurship, she developed Story Sisters, a 5-phase graphic novel to highlight her journey to finding endometriosis. The idea is that students who explore Story Sisters can address missed questions and analyze how to support their peers in similar situations.

Story Sisters plays host to a multi-month iteration to highlight the effects of endometriosis on everyday friends or family. Story Sisters represents a global effort to engage the community in personal advocacy and help others develop the confidence and fortitude to speak up.

RAINA HEIN: Surviving Model/Actress Q&A

Raina Hein FCM September 2014 editorial outtake
You saw her fantastic Sept/Oct editorial, and hopefully her feature (or buzz) pointed you here to actually read the answers to FCM's interview with Raina Hein. Beautiful, intelligent, and deserving model with amazing on-screen and print talent as a world class Actress/Model.
-Contributing FCM Writer, Asha Spacek

Asha/FCM:
You not only look mesmerizing & move well with cinematic intent in film, video, and commercials, but while you started as a model, do you think your new, or maybe long-term goal might sway toward acting?
Raina: When I first started modeling, I never saw myself acting or really even gave it any thought- it was always too scary. I knew I loved performing in a sense, but it wasn't until after living in LA for two years that I gave it a try and then realized I absolutely loved it. It's one of the most challenging and difficult things I've ever done, which is why I love it so much. I do enjoy modeling quite a lot, but I don't get to really show the world everything I've got inside of me like I do with acting. It's a very freeing feeling.

Asha/FCM: Being part of a two-time NCAA National Championship volleyball team in college, what are some of your thoughts/feelings on recent NCAA rulings with college unionization, monies, etc?
Raina: If you are referring to the recent Northwestern football player labor debate that the NCAA just entered into regarding unionization, I'd have to say that pursuing a college degree while getting a scholarship to play your sport, should be a privilege and not a job because otherwise it could diminish the desire for an education that would benefit one for a lifetime and place more desire on getting paid. However, I do think that college athletes on scholarship can definitely feel like they are an employee because they are giving a significant amount of their college lives to their sport while following strict rules and regulations in return for compensation of room, board and scholarship. When looking at the money aspect of it all (as far as football goes), television contracts alone rake in billions of dollars- I can certainly see why players are upset for not receiving a percentage of this considering they are the ones out there putting in their very best work nearly all year-round. In my opinion, after looking at the big picture and all the college students in this country; getting room, board & scholarship is a pretty big reward and shouldn't be overlooked or taken for granted by anyone. It's a good debate, and I can definitely see the points from both sides.

Asha/FCM: You hear a lot these days about companies and individuals finding or knowing they're brand. Do you think we have a clear understanding- or in case we've missed it- what is your overall brand message?

Raina:
I would like to think my brand is a mix between happy, confident, healthy, energetic, goofy, fierce, chic and artsy. My number one goal is to always be me, stay true to my morals and values, and be a good role model, all while having fun and learning as much as I can. I'd like to think I accurately portray my overall brand message- hopefully I'm right.

Asha/FCM:
According to Twitter, seems like major travel this week [esp modeling] any projects you can tell us about?
Raina: Yea...LAX and I have a pretty tight relationship. You know you travel too much when airport employees know you by name and ask, "What kind of candy do you have with you today?"

I was just in Barcelona for a week shooting the campaign for Tarik Ediz, and was in Monaco, and London two weeks ago for a meeting with a magazine. Besides those trips, I have been traveling back to my hometown of Minneapolis, Minnesota every other weekend or so to visit my loved ones whom I'm always missing.

Asha/FCM: You have amazing legs and abs. What is your workout/diet routine like to stay so toned, rather than just 'slim' like many models?
Raina: I love to stay active. I try to go hiking with my fluffy munchkin companion as often as possible which is usually two or three times a week, and I like to go on a 3-5 mile run twice a week. Other than that, I eat pretty healthy and drink a lot of water. When it comes to treats, I don't forbid myself from having them. If I do, I'll go crazy- candy is my weakness...okay and maybe frozen yogurt and sprinkles too. But, I always eat them in moderation, and I believe that if you consistently fuel your body with healthy and nutritious foods, you won't crave the junk food as much. I eat a lot of nuts, fruits, greek yogurt, hummus, veggies, healthy grains & fish, and snack all throughout the day. But I think the real secret is laughing alot...seriously.

Asha/FCM: What has gone ultra dark-haired brunette done for your career?
Raina: I didn't move to LA and start seriously modeling or acting as a blonde, so I can't really say for sure. However, I think it does give me some edge and sets me apart from a lot of girls in LA- I like being different. If I were to guess, I'd say I would work more with dark hair than with light hair, so I plan on keeping it for a while. But don't tell that to my Grandma...she's not a fan;-)

Asha/FCM:
For a bit of online clarity, who are your currently represented by [all areas of booking]?

Raina:
I am represented in a few different markets: Paris, Barcelona, Hong Kong, NYC & LA.

My head representation or "mother agent" for print and runway work is Photogenics phira@photogenicsmedia.com

For all my theatrical and commercial work I am represented by NTA Talent Nick@ntatalent.com

Asha/FCM: Knowledge is power. It seems like you continue to extend your skills and education. Congratulations! Who/what clients are on your model AND acting bucket list?

Raina:
I would love to have a recurring role on a TV series or a lead in a feature film one day. I think playing a villain or some type of Angelina Jolie character would be really fun. Working on a show like Lost, Scandal, Breaking Bad, or True Blood would be a dream. I'd love to work with Steven Speilberg, Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese, Baz Lurhmann, or Andy Tennant. As far as modeling goes, doing a campaign with exotic cats has always been a dream of mine- it'd be so much fun! Meow. I'd also love to shoot for Lela Rose, Vivienne Westwood, Free People, Calvin Klein, VS, Sephora, MAC, and more. There are so many passions and ideas I have and they're always growing and changing.

Asha/FCM: Outside of your professional career, are there any causes or groups that are important to you (or still learning/deciding)?
Raina: I support breast cancer groups dedicated to spreading awareness, research and help programs like the American Breast Cancer Foundation and Susan G Komen.

I am also very supportive of all groups promoting positive self esteem for children and teens such as: Girls For A Change, Write Girl, the Dove Self Esteem Movement, and the Love Your Body campaign by NOW foundation. Some other groups that are important to me are ones dedicated to ending child abuse such as: National Children Alliance, and the Kempe Foundation.

I have a lot of compassion for children and teens- so much so, that I've been giving some serious thought into perhaps one day going back to school and getting my MA in child counseling.

Asha/FCM:
Anything else you want the industry, and/or fans to know about Raina?

Raina: Some of my favorite quotes:

-Believe in yourself. If you don't, you won't succeed.

-Live for moments, not for things.

-Life is a journey, not a destination. So no matter what you have or where you are, you have what you have and you are where you are, so enjoy as much of it as you can, because life is too short to not do so.

-Never ever let anyone make you feel less than extraordinary.

-"Great things are done by a series of small things brought together." -Vincent Van Gogh
Thank you for your time, and to your continued success...!
My personal/top "Fashion Wish List" of clients I'd love to see Raina booked for (sorry, couldn't narrow down to ten):

Dolce & Gabanna- Valentino- YSL by Heidi Slimane- Balmain Paris- La Perla- Gucci- Roberto Cavalli- Burberry- Tom Ford- D-Squared- Viktor & Rolf- Miu Miu

Accessories: Bvlgari- Jimmy Choo- Prada
Raina Hein FCM Sept/Oct Pink Issue
Feature/Interview Recap: Without seeing one another's answers, or in this case, my feature, prior to our interview, both myself and Raina made reference to Angelina Jolie, and while she opted wishing to model VS, I raised the luxury stake (because I think she is more high end like Liu Wen) and opted La Perla. Based on her online presence, her personality traits I noted, were repeated in her brand revision, which means -I suppose- she IS who she portrays to be. Lastly, I am happy she is modeling internationally, as much as she is thinking about her future with the pursuit of acting; plus, her love for cancer related non-profits go perfect for this 'Pink' Issue for a FCM Sept/Oct Breast Cancer Month [October] Observance nationwide. I wish her so very much new business and fans around the globe. Great gal! Ciao, Bella...

They both cater to the unique style of the fashionable woman who has various body types. These collections are customized using vibrant hues and stylish fabrics. The swimwear designs are made with the woman individual style in mind.

Brazilian designer Luciana Martinez had a passion for fashion since age 6, she started Lybethras in 2002. Luciana after looking at the current swimwear designs, she noticed that they were not fashionable. Therefore, she had a notion of creating a more stylish swimwear collection for woman using more vibrant colors and prints. Further, Lybethras designs tops and bottoms separately to achieve the perfect fit for each woman’s unique silhouette.

Nira believes that swimwear should fit the contour of a woman’s body. Boobah uses Lycra products to create custom swimwear. The swimwear ranges from the one piece bikini to micro bikinis. She has an assortment of cover ups for these bikinis in the Boobah collection.
